Festival of Fools

This self initiated piece showcases the Burlington Festival of Fools as more than just entertainment; it presents the festival as a living snapshot of what Burlington is: creative, welcoming, and community driven. Through energetic crowd shots, street performers, aerial acts, and wide scenes of the city, the video captures how the event brings people of all ages together in shared public spaces. The piece acts as both a festival recap and a love letter to Burlington, highlighting the city’s identity, culture, and spirit without any formal commission, purely driven by passion and storytelling.

Project Objectives

  1. Capture the energy and atmosphere of the Burlington Festival of Fools.

  2. Show how the event brings the community together in public spaces.

  3. Visually represent Burlington as a vibrant, artistic, and inclusive city.

  4. Create a festival highlight piece that could be used by organizers or local partners in the future.

  5. Add a strong, people-focused event film to my portfolio to showcase my skills in documentary-style event coverage.

Concept Development:

  • Identify key elements to feature: performers, crowds, families, local streets, and recognizable Burlington landmarks.

  • Plan to alternate between wide shots (to show scale and setting) and close-ups (to show reactions and emotion).

  • Focus on moments of connection—laughter, applause, surprise, interactions between performers and audience.

Pre-Production:

  • Use natural available light to preserve the authentic outdoor festival look.

  • Shoot in 16:9 cinematic framing to make the city and crowds feel expansive.

  • Capture a variety of angles: low angles of performers, eye-level audience shots, and elevated views of the crowd.

  • Film handheld and/or with a stabilizer to stay mobile and capture spontaneous moments.

Production:

  • Edit to a rhythm that matches the energy of the performers and the crowd.

  • Color grade the footage to keep it bright, warm, and inviting—highlighting the greenery, brick streets, and summer light.

  • Select footage that best shows diversity in performers, attendees, and locations.

  • Mix sound so that music and crowd ambience blend smoothly, enhancing the sense of being there.
